Launch of Big History MOOC
An integrated overview of history from the Big Bang up until now
On 28 November, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) is launching a Big History Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in order to give even more people the opportunity to gain an integrated overview of history from the Big Bang up until now.
Since 2010, when Bill Gates found out about Big History and placed it on the map internationally, the development of this discipline has really taken off. This MOOC offers everyone the opportunity to learn more this subject and to integrate the content of the MOOC into their own education.
This MOOC is not a direct replacement of the intensive Big History open lecture series at the UvA, but offers a clear introduction to this theme. Short films introduce a particular part of history, and astrophysicists, geologists, biologists, historians and other scientists discuss important academic questions. Your knowledge is tested in Coursera through interim multiple-choice questions and a little Big History assignment. In addition to Coursera, the MOOC is also offered on ChronoZoom and YouTube.
Integrate the MOOC into your education
The MOOC takes approximately 4 weeks on Coursera, but the chapters will also be offered separately on YouTube and via the virtual zoomable timeline on ChronoZoom. As a result, it is possible to integrate the content yourself into your education. In this way, the Big History MOOC provides context to the various disciplines that are reviewed within this subject.
On 28 November between 12:00-13:30, the Big History MOOC will be launched in the presence of the participating professors. The launch is held at Sciencepark in the central hall, please feel welcome to join us.
