New Placemaking course successfully launched
Curriculum innovation through relay education
The IIS wondered whether it is possible to pass on the acquired knowledge to a new group of students in a project month? Would it be possible for student cohorts and professionals to build on each other's work year after year?
IIS teachers Joris Buis and Kathusha Sol thought so, and developed the new elective 'Placemaking: relay for city makers'. Twenty-four students from different bachelor programmes learn to apply their theory in this elective course in a broad network of scientists, residents, government and organizations and contribute to the area development of Amsterdam.
Pass the baton
Every semester a new group of students builds on the results of the previous student teams. By charting various aspects of the area, successive insights on feasibility on the one hand and implementation on the other hand are generated. This first year the focus of attention is the area development of Science Park. After the pilot, the course also focuses on other areas, such as the new islands of IJburg II. Based on research, workshops and small experiments, students provide the client with advise that can be implemented for further development.
In the second semester of 2017-2018 the baton will be passed on to a new group of students.
