In memoriam Ernesto Louis Lopez
On Sunday, 2 August Ernesto Louis Lopez suddenly passed away at the age of 37 as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Ernesto was a second-year student of the Research Master’s programme in Rhetoric, Argumentation Theory and Philosophy. He started his academic career relatively late in life, at the age of 27, after having first worked as an accountant. Before joining the research master’s programme in Amsterdam, he completed a B.A. at UC Berkely’s department of Rhetoric.
Ernesto was an exceptionally bright student, an analytical thinker and an ambitious researcher. He was greatly committed to the argumentation theory programme here in Amsterdam and was eager to pursue an academic career in rhetoric and argumentation theory. His academic work showed a high level of sophistication. The work that he had until now carried out for his thesis on the theoretical debate regarding the possibility of visual and multimodal argumentation was very promising. His thesis supervisor was even planning to include a paper based on this thesis in an edited volume on multimodal argumentation.
Besides being a very talented student, Ernesto was also a very empathic, humorous and helpful person. He was much loved by his fellow-students and by his instructors. With great dedication and enthusiasm he assisted the staff members of our department with the organization of a large international conference on argumentation in Amsterdam in July 2014. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
On Thursday, 6 August a memorial service was held for Ernesto at De Nieuwe Ooster in Amsterdam.
