In Memoriam Prof. Dr Dominic Baker-Smith (1937-2016)
Sadly, our former Professor of English, Dominic Baker-Smith died peacefully on Friday 26 August.
Dominic Baker-Smith was Head of the English Department from 1981 to 1998. During that time, he steered the Department through many changes and innovations in both management, technology and educational ideas and while accommodating these novelties he always maintained the values of university education, research, respect for colleagues and the need to inspire students.
All this he did with great responsibility, charm, humour, and humanity. He took early retirement from the University of Amsterdam for medical reasons and returned to England to continue his research and writing, and to enjoy his time. We, colleagues and former students, will remember him with great admiration and affection.
