Sustainability grant

Do you want to work out one of these themes in your education? Would you like to teach students more knowledge and/or skills concerning the theme of sustainability? And do you want more time to work out those ideas in specific educational activities? With this grant organized by IIS and TLC it’ll be made possible. Whether it’s about a new learning trajectory, a new course, specific parts of a course – you are invited to submit an application to realise your ideas.

  • For whom?
    • You are a lecturer or team of lecturers who teach one or more courses at the UvA and are responsible for the testing and assessment of your course.
    • You feel that involvement in educational innovation is an interesting opportunity.
    • You are prepared to share your own knowledge and inspire others.
    • You hold a position at the UvA for at least 0.5 FTE, which will last (at minimum) for the duration of the project.
    • Your supervisor has granted you permission to invest work hours in this project.

    Criteria

    The following criteria will be used to evaluate the applications:

    • Delivers a compelling contribution to the main objective of the grant; implementing the theme of green sustainability combined with related social sustainability aspects in an existing or a novel course.
    • Quality of the proposal (eg. rationale, relation between learning objectives and end terms, design, etc.).
    • Feasibility of the project within the given amount of time.
    • Relevance for the teaching practice of the university.
    • Teaching experience and background of the applicant(s).
    • Distribution of the applications over the different faculties and courses

    Other examples:

    • Within the Project Sustainable Future master students with a variation of disciplinary backgrounds work together on developing future scenario’s with solutions for the problem of the impending phosphor depletion.
    • In the minor course Degrowth it’s researched how we can develop a system that, in contrary to the existing economic model, offers our planets natural resources sufficient chances to regenerate.
    • In the bachelor course Water Governance students examine how the Sustainable Development Goals regarding water resources and the connected ecosystem services are interpreted from a North-South perspective.
    • In the first year course ‘Klimaatverandering en Zeespiegelstijging’ (Climate Change and Sea Level Rise) students learn to play with dynamic computer models siimulating the ‘real world’ to deliver forecasts on the climate in the future. 
  • Available grants

    The grant consists of an allocated maximum of 80 hours, depending on the proposed plan. These hours will be assigned on top of the hours for the course that are allocated by your own department.

  • Procedure
    • The applicant submits the application form.
    • With the granting of the grant the application should be able to prove that the head of the department or the supervisor provides the time to execute the project.
    • The application will be judged by a commission consisting of experts from different faculties assembled by IIS and TLC.
    • After finishing the project it will evaluated in collaboration with the IIS and the central TLC and the results will disseminated within the UvA and maybe included in a publication.
  • Closing date

    There is no closing date for the sustainability grant: the grant can be requested continuously through the application form.
