The key to a sustainable future is education. The IIS aims to reflect contemporary societal issues and challenges in education and it endorses the importance of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) of the United Nations. The urgency of the SDG’s remains very high. Therefore, it is important that our students can use their academic knowledge and skills by combining academic perspectives and their creativity in searching for solutions and impact.

SDGs in education at the IIS

The Bachelor's programme Future Planet Studies (in Dutch) focuses specifically on the complex issues concerning the relationship between humans and planet Earth. Goals such as climate actions, responsible consumption and production and sustainable cities and communities are key themes in this programme. Examples of courses in which these themes recur are Future Perspective for the Earth, Energy Transitions and Quality of Life.

In the Bachelor's programme Bèta-Gamma (in Dutch), contemporary social issues are addressed in thematic courses such as The City and Human(e) AI.

In the elective courses and Honours courses all SDGs may be addressed, depending on the chosen topic or issue. For each course, it is stated to which goals the course contributes.
