The final of the Create a Course Challenge 2024 has been won by students Emilia Bienek, a psychology student, and Sissi Chen, a student of medicine and biomedical sciences, with their course proposal: "Sex, Stigma and Steroids: Debugging the Hormonal Code of Mind and Behavior." They will begin refining their course, which will be available to all UvA students in the second semester of the next academic year.

The course "Sex, Stigma and Steroids" stood out as the winner due to its focus on natural sciences. It was the only course designed and presented by a duo. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and the jury praised their teamwork: “You collaborated well and aim to make collaboration a central part of the course. In doing so, you’re already practicing what you preach.”

The course explores the world of hormones and their impact on behaviour and mental health, a field known as psycho-neuro-endocrinology. The students were inspired to create this course because of the limited knowledge about how hormones and hormonal medications affect our bodies and behaviour, particularly in women. They highlighted a significant knowledge gap in research, as women have often been excluded from studies due to their fluctuating hormone levels.

The final showcased an impressive level of quality. As one of the jury members, Edith Hooge, Chair of the Executive Board, noted: “As an educational developer, I can confidently say that all these course ideas would fit into the curriculum.” She praised the students' enthusiastic participation: “It’s fantastic to see students so actively involved in shaping education and rising to the challenge so successfully. It’s proof that students contribute at least half of the quality of our education.”
