IIS' elective education brings together students from different backgrounds to work on current social issues in collaboration with organisations outside the university. This gives students the opportunity to make an active contribution to society already during their studies.
The survey, completed by 350 students, 61 per cent of whom were Dutch and 39 per cent international, shows that 63 per cent had not heard of transformative and transdisciplinary education before, but are very positive about the idea. Gaining practical experience, 59 per cent, space for personal and professional development, 46 per cent, are most often mentioned as attractive features. Only a small group, 3 per cent, said they did not find any aspect interesting.
The biggest barrier to participation is a course description that does not appeal (45 per cent), followed by unfamiliarity with the type of education (41 per cent) and limited space within one's own study programme (37 per cent).
During the focus groups, held on two campuses with 15 students, it emerged that IIS education is perceived as strong in terms of content. Students especially appreciate the collaboration with other disciplines, the practical approach and working on issues that matter to society. Organisations with a clear social purpose, especially non-profit ones, appeal the most.
In addition, students made suggestions on how to raise the profile of education and make it more accessible to students from a variety of programmes. They also shared ideas for themes, cooperation partners and skills they would like to develop.
The results of the survey will be used to further sharpen IIS' educational offerings in the future and will form input for the UvA's new educational vision and IIS' strategic agenda
