IIS-Electives
Electives Term 1 - 2024-2025
Every semester, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies offers a wide variety of interdisciplinary elective courses. IIS electives are open to a variety of audiences: students and staff from any UvA faculty, students from other Dutch higher education institutions ('bijvak' students) and any other interested parties who can take part as 'contract students'.

Change Making, Co-Creating Healthy Futures (12 ECTS)

Big History (6 ECTS)
How did the histories of the cosmos, life, earth and human societies influence each other and shape important aspects of the world together? What does big history mean for our future? [October 2024 - February 2025] -
Circular Economy and Society (6 ECTS)
What is needed to boost the transition towards a circular economy? Will plastic continue to play a role? Is it energetically even possible to be completely without ‘waste’? [October – December 2024] -
Global Digital Cultures: Interdisciplinary Perspectives (6 ECTS)
Digital platforms and apps have become central to the production, consumption and monetisation of culture. How can we understand these transformations as they take shape across the globe? [November – December 2024] -
Degrowth (6 ECTS)
How can we have a stable and prosperous economy that does not grow, let alone one that shrinks to a sustainable level, relative to existing planetary boundaries? [November 2024 – January 2025] -
Sexology (6 ECTS)
This course aims to provide you with an introduction to sexology research that is safe, up-to-date, and inspiring. [September–December 2024] -
Rethinking Sustainable Societies: New Perspectives (6 ECTS)
