Since the start of the Transition Makers Toolbox project in October 2022, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS), in collaboration with the EWUU alliance, has published a wide range of practical tools on www.transitionmakers.nl to strengthen transition-focused education. After three years of development, the focus of the IIS now shifts to implementation and consolidation. The Toolbox project in its current form comes to an end.

The Toolbox focuses specifically on affective learning and uses the Inner Development Goals framework. With these ready-to-use educational materials, teachers can prepare their students for the complex challenges of our time in a creative and interdisciplinary way.

Milestones of the Transition Makers Toolbox

In seven co-creation groups, sixty educators across twelve2igher education institutions in the Netherlands developed no less than 51 tools, covering all 23 Inner Development Goals. In addition, over 580 higher education professionals participated in 29 Toolbox workshops, both nationally and internationally. This fostered an active community of educators and education developers working together on education for societal transitions.

Since the launch of www.transitionmakers.nl in late June 2023...

  • The website has been visited by over 162,500 people from the Netherlands and beyond
  • 6,655 tools have been downloaded
  • 1520 copies of the Inner Development Conversation Starters have been distributed
  • 543 people signed up for the Transition Makers newsletter
  • 637 members have joined the IDG Higher Education Hub

Focus on Sustainable Implementation

After three years of development, the focus of the IIS now shifts to implementation and consolidation. In the follow-up project Empowered Minds, the IIS, together with the Visible Learning Trajectories Programme of TLC Central, guides degree programmes in embedding affective learning within fourteen programmes at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). In this way, the materials from the Toolbox find their way into UvA education.

UvA lecturers will also receive active support and training through the Special Interest Group Affective Learning and a multi-day teacher training, to weave affective learning into their teaching practice — enabling students to be better prepared to tackle complex societal issues.

Continued Community

Together with project partner EWUU, the IIS continues to maintain the Transition Makers community. Each year, an inspiring community event is scheduled, and new, in-depth tools will be published on the website. With this, the focus consciously shifts toward deepening and improving quality, following the broad scaling that has so successfully characterised the past four years.

Toolbox Wrap-Up Party

On Tuesday, 16 September from 3:45 to 5:00 PM, the conclusion of the Transition Makers Toolbox project in its current form will be celebrated with an inspiration session for like-minded education professionals and an informal closing with room for further conversation.
