The Roeterseilandcampus, home to three UvA Faculties, is situated at the Roetersstraat. The ambition of the City of Amsterdam, local residents, entrepreneurs, and institutions on Roetersstraat is to transform it from a traffic corridor into a liveable street with space for growing up, meeting each other, healthy living, and sustainable mobility. Picture this: children cycling to school on their own, students feeling safe walking home at night, biodiversity flourishing, and neighbours actually stopping to talk.

We asked our students to submit their radical but realistic ideas for a street experiment that brings this vision to life. Following a selection process, three finalists were invited to pitch their ideas to the jury during the grand final of the Create your Campus Challenge.

The finalists
The finalists where asked to pitch their ideas to the jury: Bouchtaoui Naima from the City of Amsterdam, Jesse Jop Jorg from We The City, UvA environment manager Sophia Blom and Roetersstraat resident Klaas Hernamdt.

The three experiments, ‘Huiskamer Roetersstraat’, ‘The Tracks to Table Project’ and ‘Livin'Room Roetersstraat’ had one thing in common: re-connecting. One team suggested a real dinner in the middle of the tram tracks. The other two teams wanted to create a temporary living room on Roetersstraat, where people can take the time to connect with each other.

Before the final, they also shared their experiments on Instagram:

The winner

After the pitches, a difficult task followed for the jury. They were impressed by the level of professionality of the experiments and pitches. After lengthy deliberation, they announced the winner of the Create Your Campus Challenge 2026:

The Tracks to Table Project! On 16 April, during the week of the Just Street, winner Mina Tüzün, will organise a dinner on Roetersstraat, right in the middle of the tram tracks.

The Impact and Audience Award
The other teams can also look back on the final with pride. They received the Impact Award or Audience Award, and they too will be able to realise their plans, albeit with a slightly smaller budget.

Thank you to all the teams for their dedication and innovative ideas. We can’t wait to see the results!
