The IIS offers a range of interdisciplinary Honours modules for students who want to get more out of their degree programme. These modules are open to students from the UvA, the Amsterdam University College (AUC) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). Creating Connections through Arts-based Research (6 ECTS)
In this Arts-Based Research (ABR) course, where traditional boundaries are challenged, you will rethink research and tackle complex issues through creativity. [February-May] -
Big Histories in Amsterdam (6 ECTS)
How have the histories of the universe, Earth, life and human societies jointly shaped the world around you? The results will be bundled in a tour through Amsterdam. [February-May] -
Birds - Our Shared History, Habitats and Future (6 ECTS)
What makes these wild animals so fascinating and how can we take interest in the lessons we can learn from them, if we are to find a new balance between nature and human activity? [February - May] -
Citizenship, Democracy, and Education in a Digital World (6 ECTS)
This course is designed to broaden students' understanding of how digitalisation intersects with themes like citizenship, democracy, and education. [April-June] -
Consciousness, Representation, and the Brain (6 ECTS)
What is consciousness? This course begins by exploring different definitions and concepts used in the field surrounding this question. [March-June] -
Cre[AI]tive Writing: Literary Invention in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (6 ECTS)
This course is a diverse exploration of creative writing as a discipline and an art form. [February-May] -
De kansenkloof (NL) (6 ECTS)
In deze cursus ga je als deelnemer ook in de praktijk aan de slag met kansenongelijkheid. Je besteed gemiddeld 4 uur per week aan vrijwilligerswerk in Amsterdam-Zuidoost of Nieuw-West. [Februari-Mei] -
Deep Ecology: Surfing the Waves (6 ECTS)
How can we grow healthy, diverse and inclusive Urban Ecosystems in interaction with the environment? Do we need an overview of the systems we are part of or can we surf the waves from within? [April-June] -
From Hell to Paradise: Dante's Journey Through the Arts and Sciences (6 ECTS)
What are Dante's ideas about literature, music and the visual arts? How were artists, writers, intellectuals, scholars and scientists inspired and influenced by Dante’s poetry? [February-May] -
Games and Decisions (6 ECTS)
How to fairly allocate prize money or ad revenue? What is the power of political parties in a democracy? And how to decide whether a company should advertise or not? [February-May] -
How to Deal with Climate Anxiety? An Existentialist Approach (6 ECTS)
Using existentialist philosophy and thinking, this course provides an intellectual framework for students to reflect on the climate crisis. [February-April] -
The Art and Science of the Imagination (6 ECTS)
Our imagination is central to magnificent achievements. According to some, current global crises largely stem from an inability to imagine better futures. [February-May] -
My Imaginary Self (6 ECTS)
Wander through film and photographs, and, through non-linguistic means, reflect on who you are as a person and young academic. It's not the end goal that counts, but the journey towards it. [February-April] -
Personal Leadership (6 ECTS)
Personal leadership is about mastering your life and the ability to inspire, influence and move both yourself and others. [February - May] -
Religious Practices Today (6 ECTS)
Are you interested in the ways religion and spirituality are practiced today? In this course we will examine religious life from different perspectives. [February-May] -
Looted Art and Restitution (6 ECTS)
What do we consider 'looted art'? what rules exist in this field; and how can we make sure that an antiquity on the market was not illicitly trafficked? [February-May] -
Scientific Programming 101 (6 ECTS)
This course is a great starting point to learn computer programming in Python, one of the most used programming languages in the world. [February - May] -
Spaces for Care (NL) (6 ECTS)

Femicide or feminicide, the intentional killing with a gender-related motivation, is the most brutal and extreme manifestation of gender-based violence of women and girls. [April-June] -

After developing a common language to consolidate and communicate complex concepts, you will learn to quantify them and build a simple but complex system yourself. [February- May] -
Open Source Investigations: Methods for Digital Research (6 ECTS)
Despite rampant misinformation and fake news, digital media plays an increasingly more critical role in journalistic and legal investigations. [February-May] -
Future Belongings (6 ECTS)
Who are we in a catastrophic world? Future Belongings is an interdisciplinary course that invites students to explore the evolving notions of belonging. [April-June] -
How Tech is Sustainability (6 ECTS)
What is the role of technology and what can it provide to help build a sustainable society? How far can a sustainable society go and under which circumstances is technology a necessary part? [April-June] -
Negotiation Frameworks for Building Better Social Bridges (6 ECTS)
This course is intended to equip you with an understanding of the strategies and psychology that underlie effective negotiation. [April - May]
