On Monday 1 December 2025, the new Special Interest Group (SIG) Affective Learning will launch with an inspiring kick-off at REC Impact (JKTB.20). The SIG is part of the Empowered Minds project of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS), in collaboration with the Teaching & Learning Centre (TLC). It offers UvA lecturers a space to explore how affective learning can contribute to deeper, more meaningful education.

During the kick-off, three UvA colleagues will share how they integrate affective learning into their own teaching:

  • Hendrik de With (Faculty of Economics and Business) teaches Future of Marketing, where he challenges students to question existing systems and explore sustainable alternatives.
  • Judith van den Boogert (mediator, dialogue facilitator and lecturer) developed a tool for her course Lost in Translation that integrates reflection, embodied awareness and dialogue on differences into teaching.
  • Jelger Kroese (minor Collective Futures) created the Cultivating Awe tool, which helps students consciously recognise and use moments of wonder to strengthen appreciation, connectedness and gratitude. He also experiments with the workshop series Meeting the Crisis Inside Out.

“Affective learning touches the core of good education,” says Linda de Greef, project lead of Empowered Minds. “Knowledge only really sticks when students feel personally engaged. In a SIG, you can experiment with colleagues, share insights, and work on teaching that appeals to both head and heart.”

Alongside inspiring contributions, there will be space to gather ideas for future SIG meetings. The afternoon will conclude with informal drinks.

Multi-day teacher training and grant

The kick-off marks the start of a broader programme around affective learning. Lecturers can also register for the multi-day teacher training Affective Education, in which they will work with affective learning methods under the guidance of experienced trainers.

Additionally, the IIS offers an Affective Learning Teaching Grant for lecturers who wish to develop or apply new forms of affective learning in their own teaching practice.
