Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as of 24 February 2022 and the full-fledged war that followed changed the way we look at the end of the Cold War. The disintegration of the former Soviet Union is still ongoing, as the Russian Federation - the principal successor state of the Soviet Union - challenges the borders of several of its neighbouring states, such as Georgia and Ukraine.

In this course, we will focus on the war in Ukraine and its consequences. In addition, we will deal with the current sparring of Russia with Western Europe and the United States by observing Russia’s geopolitical performance in all its complexity.

On the world stage, we see Russia turning to its old allies and major players, testing the contours of a new strategic and mutually beneficial geopolitical order outside the conceptual “West”. These evolving ties include road and rail works, oil pipelines, technology transfers, business investments, trade, strategic alliances, maritime accords, educational initiatives, and other ways of cementing loyalties. This elective brings together expert perspectives on how Russia is testing geopolitical waters and is exploring new contours of cooperation and influence around the world.
