  • Profile

I am a big historian, and have been involved in big history education and research at the University of Amsterdam for the last 15 years. During that period, I have taught and tailored big history to a wide variety of audiences. I have developed new course materials, new types of big-history-related courses and an entirely new little big history teaching method that has become the subject of my educational research fellow project. I have also used my background in architecture and architectural history to conduct research on little big histories of building. Such little big histories connect aspects of building to major processes in the history of the universe, our planet, life and humanity and reveal how building has been shaped by such processes and how building has shaped our biological and cultural evolution. I just finished my book about the little big history of Tiananmen, which will be published in 2023. I am a curious person, interested in and enthusiastic about many aspects of science, but most notably about the surprising synergies that often occur when bringing together ideas and people from different disciplines, and from teaching and research.
