Femicide is a universal problem. Progress in stopping such violence has been extremely limited. Women and girls are most likely to be killed by people who are closest to them, underreporting is likely, and some groups of women and girls are more likely to be affected then others.

Femicide and gender-based violence are not inevitable. Social norms play an important role in shaping pathways to femicide and in the responses, including support and care to the bereaved. These norms can and do change.

In this course you will learn how to situate femicide within other forms of gender based-violence, and what can be done to improve prevention and care. You develop your own critical thinking and your ability to imagine alternative, realistic and context specific pathways to prevent deaths, victim-blaming, and oversimplifications. You will be encouraged to actively engage with other students, guest speakers and a range of materials including academic books, movies, media reports and legal documents. While personal reflections on gender-based violence may cause discomfort, acknowledgement of both the intimate and public aspects of femicide is vital if we want to stop femicide.
