This interdisciplinary course explores the concept of globalisation in relation to various cultural forms and debates over the last three decades. As a result of economic integration, technological advancement, and cultural exchange, globalization has risen to prominence as a key topic in political and academic debates since the 1990s. However, in the post-2008 world, a growing disquiet with accelerated global interdependence has also provoked backlash in the form of populist movements that challenge political elites, international institutions, and the very idea of a global order.
Students will examine how globalisation has transformed culture, politics, and society. Traversing both Global North and Global South, students will engage with a variety of textual case studies from various cultural fields (inc. World Literature, Media and Film Studies, Critical Theory, Heritage Studies). Selected case studies will afford students a critical engagement with key topics, such as: the crisis of liberalism; the processes of decolonisation; the political economy of globalisation; and debates around migration, multiculturalism and identity. By the end of the course, students will develop a critical understanding of the participation of cultural forms in these phenomena, and be equipped to analyse contemporary political developments across a range of material, visual and literary cultures.
